GALATASARAY HISTORY
On November 1, 1905, in a classroom of a noble Istanbul high school, events were taking placewhich eventually changed Turkish sports forever. The seed for the foundation of the Galatasaray Sports Club was planted inside the Galatasaray-I Sultanisi High School by its own pupils. In addition to Ali Sami, who was the driving force behind the clubs foundation, Asim Tevfik, Emin Bulent, Bekir Sitki, Resat Sirvani, Celal Ibrahim, Tahsin Nihat, Abidin Daver and Refik Cevdet were involved in the decision to organize such a club. The Club was first known as the Galatasaray Terbiye-i Bedeniye Club.According to Ali Sami, their aim was "To play as a team like the English, to have a name associated with distinct colors and to beat all other non-Turkish teams".At first there were numerous suggestions for the clubs name including Gloria (Glory) and Audace (Courage). However, the founders decided to name the club Galatasaray.Cem Atabeyoglu, who has done extensive research on this topic, claims that the name Galatasaray originated from the teams first game against the Romanians when the team won by the score of 2 to 0. It is widely believed that the fans who watched the game referred to the team and its members as the Gentleman of Galata Saray (The Gentleman of the Palace of Galata). Mr. Atabeyoglu states that the founders liked the name and adopted it as their own.It is important to note that Galatasaray High School, where the red and yellow team emerged, continues to serve an important role in Turkish education to this day. The institution has long been associated with excellence in education and one of highest standards of civic pride in Turkiye. In the Clubs 50th Anniversary Yearbook, Ali Sami Yen the founder of Galatasaray, is quoted as saying:"On November 1, 1905, I was in the fifth grade. While attending Mr. Mehmet Atabey's literature class, a couple of my friends and I decided that we should form a school soccer team. The small number of rookies who signed up for the team soon showed that their hearts were full of passion for the game. Backed with their competitive spirit, Tevfik Sonumut, Resat Sirvani, Cevdet Kalpakcioglu, Abidin Daver, and Kamil made fierce competitors. Many Bulgarian and Serbian students who were skillful and physically strong also joined the team.As the President of the club, I appointed Asim as Treasurer and Cevdet as Vice President. The reason why I named Asim Treasurer was because he used to collect one kurus from each friend every week for the upcoming game. It made sense to have him continue to collect funds. The reason I became President was because I was the one responsible for maintaining the soccer ball. On the way to school, I used to pass by the street where pig products were sold and I used to buy lard to lubricate and shine the soccer ball so the leather would not crack. If I had to repair the ball, I used to cut a piece of leather from my newly purchased shoes to patch it. My friends who saw how dedicated I was decided to honor me with the highest degree of rank. The recognition was also due to my handling other tasks. Cevdet became Vice President because he used to launder the team uniforms. Our goal was crystal clear now:To play as a team like the English, to have a name associated with distinct colors and to beat all other non-Turkish teams."

That Precious Feeling Reserved for Members of Galatasaray Community
"I first mentioned my interest in forming a soccer club to my best friend Emin Bulent. He was older than me and had already graduated from school. Since I was still in school, we could only meet during summer vacations.
I worked closely with Asim Tevfik who skillfully handled multiple responsibilities. In a joint effort, we expanded our network and finally created our beloved club with much hard work.
As our wishes were becoming reality, we took the initiave of registering Asim Tevfik as a Number 2 and Emin Bulent as Number 3 in our official records which were kept in our museum.
Years passed with many misunderstandings and fights within the club. Emin Bulent increasingly became frustrated with the club s affairs. In fact, he was at a point of hating the game of soccer and its players. Looking back to those days, I think the only reason we kept in touch was not the fact that we had formed a sports club but because of our deep-rooted friendship.
The years rolled on.
It was a dark day which I will never forget. Emin Bulent was sick in bed, living his last few hours in his home in Goztepe. When I went to visit him, Sayin asked me to brace myself before I went in to see him because he did not want Emin to know from my facial expressions what his fate was. Emin had fought hard to stay alive during the past few month; he was a beaten man physically and emotionally. He signaled me with his hand to come and sit next to him. He indicated that he was about to tell me something he had kept inside for a long time. He said The team has not been fair to me. I feel I should have been ranked as the Number 2 member of the team. Tell all our friends if you do not grant me my wish, I will not rest in peace and my soul will be the judge of your decision and always seek what is rightfully mine.
After ridding himself of the only resentment he had of the club, Emin turned his head to one side, took his last breath and rested his lifeless hands on his blanket. I was shocke; was this the same guy who did not even want to say the clubs name with his own mouth?
To carry out Emin's last wish, I first spoke with the Number 2 member of the club, Asim. Asim personally liked Emin and cared for him as much as I did. The Clubs problems made us grow close together like the three musketeers. Asim would have given his life for Emin but he was not willing to give up his official affiliation with the team for Emin.
Faced with this emotional issue, Galatasaray Sports Clubs Assembly debated the issue and decided to honor both of these loyal founders of the team as Number 2 members leaving Number 3 spot vacant.
The above statement may not be true after all!
The truth of the situation is that the empty Number 3 spot was immediately filled by all loyal fans love, loyalty and sportsmanship for Galatasaray."
Galatasaray Club has The Rich Establishments
The club who wears the red and yellow team colors proudly has gone through many managerial changes. Each management has worked hard to obtain various establishments and increase the assets of the club. In the earlier days, the club's management obtained the club house at the Hasnun Galip as well as the places at the island of Kurucesme and Karamis. More recently the club bought parcels at Riva and Florya to build training facilities.
The Florya training camp land was brought during the presidency of Suphi Batur, built and opened during Professor Ali Uras presidency and was expanded and improved during both Ali Tanriyar and Alp Yalman presidencies.
Today, when training camps are a big issue in the sports world, Galatasaray has resolved this important issue and can even be considered one of the richest teams with regards to training camp facilities. When the red and yellow club was first established, they had a hard time finding a place to practice. Finally, in 1925 the team rented a club house in Beyoglu and later in 1938, bought it.
After an unfortunate fire, the club house burnt down, however was rebuilt including the conference rooms and arenas during the presidency of Selahattin Beyazit.
Today, whenever anyone mentions the club house within Galatasaray, the establishment at Florya Metin Oktay comes to mind immediately. Not only can the team practice soccer at this sports camp, but there is an arena for basketball teams to practice as well.
In fact, one can say that in addition to the sports facilities, the camp also offers a complete resort atmosphere with rest and relaxation facilities as well as an active social life.
The Florya Oktay Sports Camp has recently purchased 47 acres of land next to its current establishment with the help of Dr. Ali Tanriyar.
At Riva, the Galatasaray club has a large piece of land (approximately 1,175,000 square meters) which has purchased for the club by Selahattin Beyazit. Plans to develop this site are in the works.
The land and establishment of Galatasaray at the Island of Kurucesme is said to be priceless at this time. This establisment is the most popular for social activities as well as summer swimming camps. One can say the club's establishment at Kalamis is used in the same aspect as of Kurucesme.
Since Galatasaray is dedicated to promoting all sports, it is planning to open a rowing facility at Kartal Maltepe (approximately 7,000 square meters).
One of the Galatasaray's assests, the Ali Sami Yen Stadium is also considered a historical jewel. Plans are in the works to develop a new club house and a huge business center next to the stadium. As reported by the media and the club officials, the necessary licenses and official authorizations were recently obtained and the construction, building and engineering of the new stadium were to start in May 1998 with a goal of finishing it by August of 1999.
Galatasaray Museum
The Galatasaray club has a colorful history which is reflected in its rich museum. It was established in 1913 at Kalamis by Ali Sami Yen and is considered one of the first museums in the world.
After Ali Sami Yen established it, the museum was expanded by Evliyazade Mahmut, Fait Ibrahim, Suphi Neset, Selahattin Feyzi and promoted by Ihsan Ipekci, Alaattin Sahinbay, Ihsan Belor, Abdi Ipekci, Ferruhzat Turac served the club for 35 years and brought the club to today's prestigious state.
Galatasaray High School and the Club's Relationship
The Galatasaray club was born because of its high school. In the beginning, it was a school team, all the team players were students who attended the school. Years later because of the competitiveness of the sports teams, the club had to recruit from outside. This action brought strong disagreements in 1933 between Ates and Gunes which eventually created two different "school-of-thought" among the members of the club. However, the school always continued to supply a rich source of team members.
In 1950, soccer was finally recognized as a professional sport and many team members were recruits from high school. The high school soccer field, Grand Cour, was used for practice for years and, on a few occasions, was even used for official games.
After 1950 and the recognition of the professional soccer team the relationship between the club and the school was not the same. The team members were recruited from outside rather than the school and this practice put distance between the club and the school. Today there is not one member of the Galatasaray club and its whole organization who is from this educational institution. One of the reasons is that it is hard - nearly impossible - to be professional soccer player and continue the high educational standards set by the school. Many students do not have the time to spare for sports. In addition, the distance between the school and the practice facilities make it hard for students to find the time to travel for practice.
The club however supports the school in many ways. The team members are role models for students and this is a loyal way to pay back the gratitude for the school starting up the team. The club also encourages the school's basketball and volleyball teams to compete nationally and internationally. In fact, the basketball team came in second worldwide during the 1985 competitions. Today, the basketball team who has Orhun Ene as a player won every single game with ease with the exception of the U.S.A. team. The school principal, Professor Dr. Erdogan Tezic who once was on the school's volleyball team, is trying hard to revive and maintain good relations with the sports team.
